I Think My Kid Killed My Podcast

Man.. February is over already! While there's not much to mourn since it's Black History Month all year long around here, that means it's been nearly 3 months since the last interview on Comics Are Dope (The Podcast). I know I should give myself grace, as I had a pretty good reason for breaking the weekly streak. But on the internet, momentum is everything. Suddenly, posting Episode 58 feels a lot like posting Episode One -- and I'm Jar Jar Binks.

I do have a few interviews I never got around to posting, and I'll need to add those to the audio feed soon. But with a newborn in the house, I have no clue when I'll be able to record more. Just know, I hope to be back soon.

The Animorphs are Back!

Speaking of things making a return... did you know the Animorphs had graphic novel adaptations? Thanks to Graphix/Scholastic, I've been binge reading volumes ahead of this week's release of Volume 6. I'm not sure what I expected them to be like, but they've jumped to the top of my Favorite Reads so far this year, and I'll be surprised if they're not still in the Top 5 come December.

There's a lot to love about these graphic novels. Each volume is an adaptation of the original by husband and wife team KA Applegate. Chris Grine does a great job cutting out the prose descriptions and keeping a quick pace without losing character voices. And his art? Incredible. I think my favorite aspect is the kid-friendly body horror that comes with each transformation.

I only had one or two Animorphs volumes as a kid, but these are a great way to experience the property for the first time. I really hope they get to adapt all 54 of them! At the current pace of 2 per year, I've got plenty of time to make room on my shelves... Just as long as my kids know to keep their paws off.

I remember the first time I heard "Livin' on a Prayer." I was couch surfing the summer before my senior year of college with two close friends -- one of whom was a theater major (is it theater or theatre? anyways...) Before the fall semester started, my friend decided to invite all her theater homies over for a kickback to start the school year. That was my first 'white' party. As a black kid in the suburbs, you don't really see white people in their natural habitat. You get to play outside,...

This week, we crossed the 20,000 subscriber mark on the Comics Are Dope YouTube channel. As I said on Threads, I don't think I've met 20 thousand people over my lifetime. The idea of that many people clicking the subscribe button after seeing me talk about fictional heroes in capes and tights is crazy to me. While I think every YouTuber (including me) dreams at least a tiny bit about having one of those 100,000 subscriber plaques; every subscriber on this journey feels like a gift I couldn't...

One of my heroes is the late Congressman John Lewis. As one of the co-founders of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, he was on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement at an age when most kids are trying to decide which super easy elective they're going to take to boost their Freshman GPA. He often talked about the days of sit-ins and marches, recalling all his arrests during those demonstrations as getting into "Good trouble. Necessary trouble." Car trouble is neither of...
