Bargain Comics and a Special Announcement!

It’s been a busy week! My cushy Work-From-Home job became a Work-From-the-Office job on Wednesday. But it wasn’t all bad news, as it meant I was in close proximity to an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet I’d never been to before. I ended up coming up on a mother load of action figures at a great price! Check out the video to see what I grabbed.

Speaking of things at a great price, did you catch the trailer DC put out for their new compact comics? I think they're a great way to get new people into the hobby, and would be great stocking stuffers this holiday season. But don't bring one to me. My eyes can't handle that tiny trim size.

More Comic Reviews

After reading Spider-Man: Reign last week, I jumped straight into Chip Zdarsky and Daniel Acuña's Avengers: Twilight. It's a great Steve Rogers story set in a dystopian future. Can he assemble the Avengers one last time? Check out my full video review, live on the channel now. Then pre-order the Trade Paperback before it releases on August 27th.

On The Podcast

This week, DJ Ben Ha Meen joins the podcast to talk about his career, how DJing made him cool, and what it was like working on his first comic — a graphic novel starring Jimi Hendrix! This was a really fun conversation, but not one with language suitable for young ears. It’s our first episode with a Parental Advisory sticker. Put the kids to bed or grab some headphones, then enjoy!

Exciting News!

I’m pleased to announce that Comics Are Dope (and thus, this newsletter) is officially sponsored by my LCS, Fight or Flight Comics in Raleigh, NC. Dan has been my good friend for years, and Emily and Max make every customer interaction a dream. I’m super excited to do what I can to support the shop and help to reach new people in the name of dope comics.

Our first big project will be a video series documenting the build of Fight or Flight’s brand new location this fall! Be sure to stay tuned to see the progress, and if you’re ever in Raleigh, come check us out!

I was going to close this out with something sentimental, but I've already taken up a ton of words. Just know I'm incredibly grateful for your support. I've been working behind the scenes on some really cool things. I'm crossing my fingers in hopes I'll be able to show them to you soon. Until then...

Not long ago, I wrote about a series of "Dope Comics With Something to Say." As a general rule, I love it when comic creators find a way to put real world perspectives in the pages of funny books. After all, learning through literature has been a thing since we were sitting in a circle hearing Mother Goose rhymes. But a few recent reads have had me flip-flopping on my position a bit, and now I'm scratching my head trying to articulate myself. I already told you how I felt about Tom King's...

These days, I'm not spending as much time in front of the camera. But the consolation prize is I get to spend more time talking comics in other forums, like our Discord community. Last week, someone asked everyone for their Top 3 comics on the pull list at the moment. After thinking about it for a while, I came to a shocking conclusion. Comics have been in a great place for the past 18 months or so. We've got the Energon Universe at Skybound, the Ultimate Universe at Marvel, and the Absolute...

Spring Cleaning isn't fun. It's especially not fun when you just moved, and you're not really cleaning. Instead, I'm finally unpacking the last 15% of boxes in the house. Stuff we didn't need at all right away, that I now have to find a good place in the house for. Thankfully, we finally bought a minivan, so the inevitable trips to Goodwill and the local trash dump will be that much easier. I've got less than 4 weeks until I have to return to my day job, and I'm determined to have a catalog...
