The Super Bowl is On, But All I Can Think About are Comics
I was supposed to send this out 3 days ago. But here we are, on Super Bowl Sunday, looking back at an awesome week in comics. As expected, Thundercats #1 brought out all the nostalgia. Thankfully, Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss delivered, and I'm excited for issue 2! Let's talk about more of my favorites from last week.
- Ultimate Black Panther #1 | Bryan Hill (w), Stefano Caselli (a) | Thanks to the hype of Ultimate Spider-Man, this issue sold out immediately at all the shops I frequent. If you haven't gotten a chance to read it, there's a second printing on FOC this weekend. Hurry up and call your shop to order! It's worth every penny, and will especially feel great if you're a fan of MCU T'Challa.
- Batman #142 | Chip Zdarsky (w), Giuseppe Camancoli / Andrea Sorrentino (a) | The Joker: Year One storyline kicked off this week. While I wasn’t excited about another Joker story so quickly, Chip Zdarsky has piqued my interest. Not only are we getting a look at the Joker’s life right after his Killing Joke origin story, but it looks like he’s got quite the plan brewing in the present. This issue sold out online, but check your local comic shop as Batman is weekly for the month of February.
- The One Hand #1 | Ram V (w), Laurence Campbell (a) | This is a good old-fashioned Noir/Detective story, with the atmospheric intensity you would expect from a Ram V title. It was a great first issue, but the real selling point is the fact that this series is a direct tie-in to the upcoming The Six Fingers by frequent collaborator Dan Watters. Watters’ series will tell the same story, from the perspective of the criminal being chased. It’s tap dancing on the line of my PG-13 sensibilities, but this is definitely an indie series you need to be looking out for.

This was a sad week in comics. There's just no way around that statement, and I'm still in a somber mood over it all. We lost artist Mark D. Bright, whose work with Dwayne McDuffie on Icon opened me up to the Milestone Comics universe. But there's another tragedy rightfully taking over the headlines.
