Stray Dogs Gets a Follow-Up, and Black Panther Underwhelms.

I feel so off-track to start the week. I started the day with a job interview, and ended it with a sick toddler. Safe to say, I’m already behind on my To-Do List. I figured I’d type this e-mail from my iPad while I snuggle up next to the toddler and watch Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood for the 74th time today. Let’s review a few comics I picked up last Wednesday. New Comic Reviews: 3/20/24 Black Panther #10 | Eve Ewing (w), Chris Allen (a) | Volume 10 of Black Panther is over, and MAN did that ending feel rushed. I can’t say I’m satisfied with it, though the art was pretty good. I don’t know what Marvel has planned for 616 T’Challa after the Blood Hunt event this summer, but I’m not holding my breath for it. Thankfully, Bryan Edward Hill’s Ultimate Black Panther is scratching the itch for now. Wonder Woman #7 | Tom King (w), Guillem March (a) | DC was very clear that this was a filler issue before the next story arc, and it reads that way. Still, it was fun to see Clark & Diana manage a frustrating trip to a Space Mall, and Tom King found a really fun way to make some pretty poignant statements about qualities at the core of DC’s Trinity. Lilo & Stitch #2 | Greg Pak (w) Giulia Giacomino (a) | Stitch is lost in New York, but there’s no distance Lilo won’t travel to keep Ohana intact. This felt like a longer read than issue 1, but still just as charming. If you read comics with your kids, this series is a must have. On The Podcast One of my favorite pandemic-era comic reads was Stray Dogs; a subversive suspense comic that takes the cute style of your favorite Don Bluth films and marries it with the pacing and terror of a serial killer thriller. 3 years later, Tony Fleecs is bringing back the entire creative team (artist Trish Forstner, colorist Brad Simpson) for FERAL, an ongoing comic about a group of cats trying to survive a Final Thoughts It’s hard to recap the week in comics without mentioning the allegations around Ed Piskor that broke over the weekend. It’s all too fresh to editorialize about. But as the father of a teenaged daughter, the details are sobering to say the least. Though we all love comics as a form of escapism, I think this is a good reminder for us all to be more present in our daily lives, and to be honest with ourselves about how we’re really doing on the inside. This was a sad week in comics. There's just no way around that statement, and I'm still in a somber mood over it all. We lost artist Mark D. Bright, whose work with Dwayne McDuffie on Icon opened me up to the Milestone Comics universe. But there's another tragedy rightfully taking over the headlines.
