Christopher Priest talks Editorial Interference, Breaking Into Comics & More

This Week in Comics has been amazing. Marvel and DC put out their annual Black History Month anthologies, Kid Cudi made his comics debut with Moon Man, and the Titans: Beast World event finally wrapped up. But my favorite part of the week by far is the release of part 1 of my interview with Christopher Priest.

Priest stopped by Comics Are Dope (The Podcast) to promote the upcoming Vampirella #666, but we had a 3-hour, career spanning conversation. Part 1 covers:

  • Being Hired by Marvel in the late 1970's
  • The Role of a Comic Book Editor
  • Learning from Legends like Larry Hama and Denny O'Neil
  • Being Inspired by other Storytelling Mediums
  • The Harsh Realities of a Career in Comics

You can listen to Part One on all podcast platforms. As a bonus, YouTube Channel Members (at both tiers) have access to the full, 3 hour video interview. You can join the membership and gain access for as little as $1.99/month if you're interested.

On The Channel

Over on YouTube, I recently posted my January Comic Haul. The best part of a January birthday is you get extra spending money in an otherwise down moment for shopping. The theme for the month was all about going back and filling gaps in the collection. Check out the video to see what we added to the library last month!

I hope you enjoy the podcast and videos this year. If you have any suggestions for podcast guests or video topics, feel free to leave them in a reply to this e-mail.

Shopping holidays. We all love them, right? Valentine's Day, Black Friday, Mother's Day... Days set aside on the calendar specifically to throw money at the people and things we love. My favorite is the first Saturday in May, which since 2001 has been known in comic circles as Free Comic Book Day! Comic Publishers, Retailers and Distributors get together each year to select a group of titles designed to represent a wide variety of what's available in the overall comic market, and offer...

Does your to-be-read pile ever feel like a never-ending abyss you've fallen into? Are you embarrassed when a long-delayed issue 2 comes out, and you still haven't read issue 1? Have you ever misplaced an entire week of single issues you purchased? Me either. Okay... I'm lying. But you knew that already. The good news is I made a significant dent in my to-read pile this weekend, and an interview-free week means I should be 100% caught up by this Friday, for the first time in a while. There's a...

This was a sad week in comics. There's just no way around that statement, and I'm still in a somber mood over it all. We lost artist Mark D. Bright, whose work with Dwayne McDuffie on Icon opened me up to the Milestone Comics universe. But there's another tragedy rightfully taking over the headlines. Cartoonist Ed Piskor passed away Monday morning, marking a tragic end to an unfortunate scandal that had been brewing for the previous week. I mentioned the sobering nature of the allegations...
